Beloved Community - ongoing Based on the concept of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Beloved Community," this project is an homage to the Beloved Community, Dr. King's global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the Earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. This piece is about collecting the handwritten transcriptions of the word. A "beloved" teacher, Lynda Barry, describes handwriting as one of the last places we have that connects everyone to drawing in the age of digital devices: "Hands, the original digital devices!" The works at Matta are part of a larger ongoing edition of ”drawings/portraits”. The series is a neon metta inspired meditation first starting with the artist’s own handwriting and radiating out to family, friends, larger community(ies). We dreamed this piece into being to illuminate thresholds, literally and in terms of curiosity, interconnection & transformation. Like buddhist prayer flags setting the intentions into the wind - we work with light towards our aspirations. Ho‘oponopono is a Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.
